Question Unable to rename Files in XP

Hi,

I've needed to rename a number of files. These are just personal movie (.avi)files, not system files.

i keep recieveing the error " This file is currenly being used by another process, closed alll process and try again" (or to that effect) anyway, i tried the below

-close all programes (except Windows explorer)
-i closed my antivirus (AVG) in case it was trying to scan it,
-i even restarted the pc (then shut downt AVG again)
-Set explorer to "list" the files and not use thumbnails (in case it was reading the files)

and i still cant rename the files. I ended up using dos to rename them.

What is causing this problem?

for a few files dos is easy, but for more, and longer files this gets tidious!

thx

LOL is that the only way to solve this problem!? yeah it is an option, but to restart just to rename some files then to restart again to be able to do something will take longer than my DOS work around

is there any way to see what process are running on a particular file? (apart from Task manager)

You'll just find it's Explorer that's hogging your AVI files. Index data for AVIs is stored at the end, and XP searches down the file for it, instead of doing the "smart" thing and starting at the end and working back. If you waited long enough, the rename should work.

More info here, but I think the page is out-of-date and SP2 fixes it. I did find this though, and while it's dealing with deleting large AVI files, it could well fix your problem.
