Windows 2000 Pro Network Problem
I previously posted a thread regarding a connection issue here but I think the two are related.
My current problem is this: I have the following network: - 3 Windows XP Pro Machines - 1 Windows 2000 Pro Machine - All machines connected to an Edimax Router - ADSL Modem connected to the above router. The WinXP machines work fine, the prob is with the win2k machine (as the title says). The problem is this: As i mentioned in the other thread, Interent Explorer always displays a dialogue box asking if you want to work offline or try again. Clicking on try again seems to start the connection and everything is fine. I want this to stop happening. When I went to check sum settings, I noticed that the machine wasnt connected to the network. I checked my ip (i dont use a dhcp server service from the router as I use static ips) and dns settings. They were all ok. So i renamed my pc, restarted and it connected to the network fine. I ran IE and the dialogue box appeared again, but i could browse the interent after clicking try again. I restarted and i didnt connect to the network. Sometimes, simply disabling and re-enabling the network connection fixes the problem and sometimes it doesn't. The machine was formatted about 2 weeks ago (the problem was happening even then). Any help would be sooooo greatly appreciated. |

I managed to solve the problem and thought I'd share how for future reference.
I did as glc said above but it still didnt fix it (thanks anyway). I then spoke to an IT Engineer and he said that it sounded like an intermittent (hope spelt correctly) fault. So he recommoneded the following steps: 1. Change the PCI slot the network card was plugged in. 2. Try a new network card. 3. Try a new physical network connection point. While none of the above worked for me, they might work for someone else. That's why I mentioned it. I then had enough of messing around and decided to format the stupid thing again and reinstall the card. Did it work I hear you ask? I'm afraid not. Then I decided to to what everyone had told me won't make much difference and decided to upgrade IE 5 to IE 6. Lo and behold, it worked. I hope that this may come in handy for future users. My prayers have been answered for now anyway
