chkdsk/f won't run
I'm trying to run check disk on my wife's computer but all I get is the type of file which is NTFS and the next line is checking file on system C and then it tells me "cannot open volume for direct access" and then, "windows has finished checking disk". I get this message on every start even if I'm not trying to run check disk. She's running XP Pro. Any help??
Thanks, Hank |

Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down or restart your computer

EzyStvy, Thanks for the response. I have tried Microsoft's suggestions and none helped. I remembered I had the same problem on my computer a while back and fixed it by getting the latest updates and fixes for Norton System Works 2002. I should have put those fixes in my wife's computer before the problem started on her computer. (She also uses Norton System Works) Now, Norton has stopped supporting System Works 2002, too old I guess. My next move is to upgrade to Norton System Works 2005 and see if that will fix the problem. I am able to run chkdsk form the XP CD and nothing is wrong with the drive.
Thanks for your help anyway. Hank |

I'd uninstall System Works myself. It can get in your way big time. It's probably Disk Doctor trying to take over from chkdsk.

In case anyone is following this thread, I uninstalled Norton System Works as glc suggested and sure 'nuff, chkdsk/f worked fine. I'm going to install System Works 2004 and see if everything is still ok. If not, I'll post results here.

The only part of System Works I would use is the Antivirus - and then it would have to be 2003. '04 and '05 are bloated to the point of causing major slow downs.

Yes, I've heard the slowdown complaint before. Also heard it works fine on some computers. I'll give it a try and if she complains, I'll take it out. Thanks for the warning and heads-up. Hank

My experience with NAV 2002, 2003, 2004 and a single copy of 2005 don't support the system slowdown reports that I keep hearing about. I have 5 machines, all running NAV. Good product as far as I am concerned.
