Slow programmes
A lady friend of mine boots her computer into XP quickly with no trouble. She can click on "my documents" or "my pictures" right away.
However if she clicks on the internet, or some other programme, it can take several minutes to come up. She clicked on MGI Photosuite this morning, and it took 7 minutes to come up. There is only Norton internet security ticked in msconfig. She has done the sfc /scannow, and it has not improved it. In the system services, there is nothing extra running compared to my similar system. Thanks Jack AMD Athlon 2400+ 512 meg of DDR ram Broadband internet. 80 GIG Hard drive |

Thanks for the swift reply.
She has run Lavasoft, Spybot, and a Norton scan, all with the latest definitions, and the system is clean. Jack |

She has just told me that if she boots the computer and leaves it for about 7 minutes after it gets to the desktop, it works perfectly.
Something must be loading in the background when the desktop is up and running. Jack |

I will tell her later today to do that, and will let you know the result.
Thank you Jack |

Disabling Norton made no difference, however, I have just returned from her house after installing the Microsoft Beta version of anti spyware. I updated it, and did a scan.
It found two files and 2 registry items, which I deleted. Upon re-start the computer was fine, and programmes were accessible right away. Lavasoft, and Spybot, failed to find these items. Thank you for the suggestions. Jack |
