Defrag Blues

why won't the xp machine defrag? It shows the file at 12% fragm....then completes but still shows 12%. And BTW, why is the part in brackets always double i.e. 12% shows 24% fragmentation inside the brackets.

Did you read the question at all??

I want to know why the part in brackets is double.

Ive rebooted numerous times. I was trying the defrag from the cmd prompt, now I used it from the defrag tool in sys tools. It says...files that did not defragment....(fragments 28,149) File size 3.35gb. File name (well, I can't read all the file name cause there's not enough room and the window dont resize)...\documents and settings\all users\...

So, the question again is why won't this file defrag?

What is the system, what file system is used(fat32,ntfs)?
Have you run a diagnostic on the drive(available from manufacturer's site)?
The file(s) that won't defragment are probably corrupted and can't be defragmented.
It's adviseabe to first runa diagnostic on the drive, just to make sure of it's integrity determine what files won't defragment, perhaps uninstall and reinstall them.

Do you have bit torrent files on this PC?

Why it would be reporting 2x is strange but their are alot of reasons why some (3.4gb seems like a ton) application files (in use) might not defrag.

Have you tried it in Safe Mode?

if you type defrag c: off a cmd prompt every machine has that double defrag thing inside these <.........>

Bit torrent? Dunno.

Yes, I tried it in safe mode.

In the defrag window the red lines are at extreme ends. It's all to do with the application data folder in all users.

Maybe a screen shot may help. I just fired up defrag and there is nothing on my screen shown in brackets.

Go and get Diskeeper and I'll bet you won't have the problem any more.

That is most likely your "problem." I'd recommend defraging in Windows. When running defrag from the command promt, the first line, will Not update. It is static.

The first percentage (after the disk size) is the disk fragmentation. The second percentage is file fragmentation.

The info will not update on the screen until defrag is done, which could take hours. If you'd like real time updating on progress, then run defrag in Windows.

Attached is a screen shot showing the start (first stat line) and the finish (second stat line).

HTH
