Question Windows Me will not boot

when I start the PC , will show the Windows Me ,then it get to the wallpaper does a scandisk and stop there , no icons. I try a WinMe CD (upgrade) will not boot. Use a Win98 (full) and boot. Just to try. used my XP CD (upgrade) and boot plus it tells me another version of windows. I was thinking windows was errased because only booted on Win98. Tried safe mode but do the same as normal and stop at wallpaper and no icons. any help ? thanks.

Hi 15Y

For a try at a quick fix, see if you can start the computer in Safe Mode (tap the F8 key as the computer starts up from a cold boot). If you can reach Safe Mode, you can try a System Restore from there.

If this is a major-brand computer: do you have a set of Recovery Disks?

[Also - when you booted with the Win98 & WinXP disks, did you allow any Setup to start? (I'll assume not, but if so, you'll want to repair things a bit).

Do you have a set of backups for any personal data you wish to keep, in case a full reformat is necessary?
______________________

Should you not have any Recovery Disks, and if no Setup processes started during your tests with 98 & XP, if the system won't boot from the WinMe disk - see if you can find out if it's damaged. [Your system should boot from it, if the CDROM drive is the 1st boot device in the computer's Bios Setup, and if the disk isn't damaged]. It might just be dirty, or have some scratches. If the CD seems OK, you can also try booting the system with a floppy diskette for WinMe from http://www.bootdisk.com, and then trying an over-the-top reinstall, using your WinMe CD & following the tips in this thread http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846

Best of luck

Remove the hard drive and slave it into another computer to recover your documents.
