very slow computer (win98)
I am working on a dell dimension xps r350, Pentium 2 , 198 ram . This computer is malware - virus and spyware free. Occasionally freezing. can not complete a defragmantation. Any ideas ?

This thread actually belongs in the Windows ME/9x/DOS forum.
Run defrag from Safe Mode. Have you openend it up and cleaned the interior yet? Cricket

try defragging it in safemode as there might be another program/service interfering with it.

yes. I just noticed it didnt belong here.. : ( getting old.. ( can the admin move this tread.? ) my eyes decieved me i believe. this system needed many many updates. I got them all but still... after getting the updates it wouldnt start up. i had to unplug it everytime i updated it

btw cricket it is clean like brand new.
its an old sytem actually.. Kinda normal. but i need to do my best before i can say this computer is about to die

ok... tried defragmenting in safe mod. went up to %36 . then message ' fatal exception 0e occured at 0028:C02479CC in vxd vwin32(05) + 00000bf4 current application will be terminated'
I ll now clone this system to a different HD and see if it performs better? wis it a good idea? am i wasting my time ? |

It was a bad HD situation New one worked perfectly fine.
