Windows XP slow boot

My XP machine has recently started giving me problems when it boots up. After the first Windows logo screen goes away, I am left with a blank screen (for 3-5 minutes) before I finally get a logon screen. How can I tell why it is taking so long to get to my logon screen?

Have you run virus and spyware scans? You either have malware or an excessive amount of services/applications running in your startup.
