Hi, try these steps:

1.Boot from your XP CD
2.Select 'R' for repair
3.Key in '1'
4.Key in administrator's password
5.Type chkdsk /r
(Will take about 1/2 hour, reboot when checking completes)

This should resolve the 'missing file' problem. Not sure if it's the problem for your case.

Goodluck !

1) Did he ever say anything about a missing file?
2) I'm 99% sure your computer is mixing up the task to shutdown with the task to startup.
Try going to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
Once you're in Command Prompt type the following:
Code:
shutdown -s
Now, you chould come up with a screen that says Windows is shutting down, to save all data, and that it will shut down in 30 seconds. If this doesn't work, then you have some quite deaper error, and repost about the workings.

Check your bios for "wake" events - wake on lan (WOL) may be enabled.
