Pissed Loading Windows 98SE in Lap Top

I was trying to remove mandrake linux 9.1 from my laptop and load win98SE from CDROM.I could reformat hard disk successfully and windows copied all the files and restarted the computer. However while windows was checking for plug and play devices it freezes and loading of OS could not be completed. This happens every time I try to reload win98SE.The machine is a compaq laptop running on Intel Celeron processor. It has PCMCIA,3 USB ports , one IEEE fire wire port ,CDROM, floppy ,56KBPS modem.
How do i complete loading of the Win98SE OS.Please help.
Thanks

Make sure all peripherals (USB, firewire, parallel, serial, etc.) and PCMCIA cards are disconnected/removed. Add them back in one at a time once Windows is installed. 98 has a difficult time allocating and sorting resources anyway - having all the addon devices installed just makes it harder.

It is NOT a good idea to load ANY operating system with peripherals connected.

You need to physically remove them. I'm not saying to disassemble the laptop - just eject any PCMCIA cards from the sockets and disconnect all cables/cords except the power cord. Peripherals are things that plug in, not internal devices.

do you have a floppy drive on your laptop? my dell inspiron 8000 has one in a removable media bay. win 98 will never get past the detecting plug and play devices if the floppy drive was not present, even when i'd booted from the install CD.
