monitor has developed mysteriious white square
Recently did a repair/reinstall of the OS (as directed by Dell) due to corrupted files, etc. My current desktop was based on a GIF from one a file already on my PC. I decided to change to another design, but afterwards, a 3 in. square popped up to the right of center with that original desktop design in it. When I changed desktop design again, the square turned white and now that is ALWAYS on the desktop. Restarts, Norton Utilities, Registry Repair all do nothing to remove the white square. This also happened just after the latest XP updates where automatically loaded on my PC. Because of the XP updates, I have no earlier restore settings to choose from, either. Thanks for the help.

Go into display properties/desktop and check the postion tab. Selecting "stretch" will fill the whole screen with the image.

I think you missed the point of my problem. It is not that the GIF I choose for my desktop display is too small, it's that there is a white box on my screen that can not be removed by changing desktop designs or by making any other adjustments. I can add and change all the new desktop designs I want, it's just that a whilte box always appears on the desktop in front of any design change I make. I reinstalled video drivers, but that doesn't help. Dell thinks there may be a virus, but until I know what to look for, I have to depend on my Norton AntiVirus, which is ALWAYS active.

I have been in this quandry for some time. Each time, previous to this probem, whenever I changed desktops, upon the window closing, I'd get the message that Active Desktop.HTML could not be found. I did many searches to find this file, to no avail. I looked for ways to turn on Active Desktop. None of the suggestions (from the suggested page to view) seems to apply to my situation. I have no tab that says WEB to either check or uncheck.

Go into your profile (documents and settings, your user name) and open the desktop folder. Set your folder options to show hidden and system files and unhide extensions for known file types. If there's a desktop.ini file in the desktop folder, delete it and reboot.
