Corupted File fix

With XP Home, I get "corrupted file messages". Says run Check Disk. Run Check Disk Says run with /F option. Try that, says can't run file in use by another processes. Also can't run Defrag same message. Had not luck in safe mode.

I'm stuck

Appreciate any suggestions.

Do you have virus checking software? If you are not having any luck even in safe mode there could be something else wrong. My advice is if you have anti virus software run it in safe mode, also run spyware and adware checkers in safe mode. If nothing is found by those two we can go from there. Because there shouldnt be anything in safemode preventing you from running chkdsk and defrag.

Open a command prompt (NOT the Run box), type CHKDSK /F

It will tell you that the drive is locked, would you like to do it on next reboot - answer Y, close the window, and reboot. It will run on bootup.

Why can't you run commands from the Run box?

Because the window will not stay open to allow you to press the required key. You need to run chkdsk /f at a command prompt.
