Problems........!!
Hey guys. I have win98SE, and i want to upgrade to win2000 prof. However, while trying to upgrade i have run into problems!!!
Reliability and quality are key design goals of Windows 2000. Microsoft realizes that compatibility issues with devices and programs can compromise these goals if you are not given the best information available. During Windows 2000 testing of certain devices and programs, Microsoft found some compatibility problems you might encounter after you upgrade to Windows 2000. This report describes those problems. In most cases, new software updates from the hardware or software vendor can correct these problems. If you are concerned about the results of this report, you should not upgrade to Windows 2000 until these problems are corrected. For more information about product compatibility with Windows 2000, you should contact your hardware or software manufacturer. You can also visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/compatible for additional information. Contents: Hardware Software Incompatible with Windows 2000 Software to Reinstall Program Notes General Information Upgrade Pack Information Hardware -------- This section of the report describes hardware compatibility issues. Incompatible Hardware The following hardware may not support Windows 2000 without additional files. Please see the Microsoft Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/compatible/ for a list of compatible hardware. (Some of the following entries might be software that is registered as hardware.) Display adapters 3D Prophet II MX Dual-Display Video Network adapters 3COM USB Network Interface (3C19250) (not currently present) Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4) SCSI controllers HPT RCM DEVICE HPT370 UDMA/ATA100 RAID Controller You can continue with the upgrade, but the hardware may not work until you supply the additional files. Incompatible Hard Disk Controller Setup does not have a driver for a hard disk controller on this computer. To continue Setup, you should have the correct Windows 2000-compatible driver disk. If you do not supply this driver, Setup might fail. Do not use a driver disk designed only for Windows 95 or Windows 98. It is recommended that you have the correct driver ready on a floppy disk before you continue. If Setup cannot proceed without the driver, you will need to cancel Setup. Software Incompatible with Windows 2000 --------------------------------------- This section lists information about programs that are incompatible with Windows 2000. Before upgrading, evaluate how important these programs are to you. Incompatible Hardware Accessories The following programs support your computer hardware; however, they are incompatible with Windows 2000. To see whether updated versions of these programs are available, visit your hardware manufacturer's Web site. Creative Labs SoundBlaster Accessories Software to Reinstall --------------------- The following programs need to be reinstalled after the upgrade, because they use different files and settings in Windows 2000. Adaptec Easy CD Creator You should remove the program before upgrading. (Many programs can be removed using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel). After upgrading to Windows 2000, you can then reinstall the program. Program Notes ------------- This section describes issues that might affect some of the programs you use. Be sure to read this section before you begin the upgrade to Windows 2000. Microsoft Outlook 2000 After Windows 2000 Setup is complete, you have to reinstall Microsoft Outlook 2000. To do this, start Outlook. If Outlook 2000 is part of your Startup folder, reinstallation will automatically begin the first time you log on to Windows 2000. Reinstallation takes a while, and the progress bar restarts several times. General Information ------------------- This section provides important information that you need to be aware of before you upgrade. Recycle Bin Setup found 278 files in your Recycle Bin. If you continue upgrading to Windows 2000, these files will be deleted. Upgrade Pack Information ------------------------ The following information was provided by upgrade packs. Norton AntiVirus Your installed version of Norton AntiVirus is designed for Windows 95 and Windows 98, and will not run under Windows 2000. Norton AntiVirus 5.0 Your installed version of Norton AntiVirus is designed for Windows 95 and Windows 98, and will not run under Windows NT. Now what should i do? i can't find the drivers. |

did you open it under Windows 2000? when you run the windows 2000 driver install program that you just downloaded, after it extracts the program, it runs GIUpdate.exe, which then calls Newdev.dll (the Windows 2000 new-device installer)...if you run the program under 98, it's not going to find it...GIUpdate.exe has to be run from 2000.
as for the hpt370, you would probably want the file labeled: * Windows 2000 * at the bottom of the page it says an asterisk "indicates the latest device drivers for the O.S."...but there's some archaic crap about not supporting ATAPI devices. I have no clue what this means, since I think IDE RAID is a crime against nature. so it might be better safe than sorry and use v1.0.3b or v1.0.3, unless you know what this means. my suggestion would be to free up a partition on the machine, install Windows 2000 on that partition so you can safely test it and figure out exactly what needs to be done, before you do any upgrading of your system. |

No - 2000 works just fine with fat32.
You might want to do a dual boot 98 and 2000. Just use Partition Magic to create a new partition and install 2000 to that - and it will keep 98 intact and use the 2000 boot menu to let you choose. |
