Two drives, two different Os's ?

Hi ! Can I install a new drive, do a Win2kpro clean install, and move
the existing/removed original C drive with W98Se to D and still be
able to access files in D from C ?
(Assuming required program(s) to open files is on both drives)

Cheers,
Chris.

Yes, that will work to access the files on the moved W98 drive only. XP will be able to "see" the fat32 files. However, W98 will not be operable under that configuration. It will basically be a storage drive.

If you want a multi boot system you will have to keep the W98 on the C:\ drive and install XP on the D:\ drive and allow setup to configure multi boot.

Thanks- Yes thats all I want to do- just access the files.
youve set me straight. I'm too old for multi boot- nerves are shot .
Gotta keep it simple. "XP" is like a profanity to me .

Cheers,
Chris.

If that`s what you want to do then keep it simple. Remove the drive that W98 is on, install the new drive that you want to install XP on, run the install and after you are finished, slave the W98 drive and you`re in business. Just navigate to the slaved drive and move your files over. When you`ve moved everything where you want it, why not repartition the old drive in disk management to NTFS.

That`s how I`d do it anyway.

Simple is good..

I'll probably format the old c /new d , after I've moved a few files, then install new win2000 and use it for back ups.

Just waiting for the FedEx man .

You should not install any OS on the second drive - just format it for storage and convert it to NTFS.

I didn't do that glc. Just plugged it in as slave with the W98 on it and a few days later I get a blue 'stop error screen'. CHKDSKed for ' drive file system inconsistency' which cured it.

School of hard knocks! I'll listen to you more next time .
