WinXP professional and old programs
I don't know why Windows XP Pro refuses to run older based Win98 compatible programs and says something about 16-bit Windows Subsystem - D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Then these programs refused to run at all. Any ideas?

XP doesn't have a DOS based component. The Command prompt is the closest thing and it's not true DOS. Consequently, you can't run a DOS program on XP. You can, however, use the Compatibility Mode with some old programs so they will run on XP.

That's a Windows 95/98 based program and it's not DOS, and when I switched the compatibility mode to these older OSes, it's still the same.
![]() Edit: WinXP home edition allows these older Win95/98 based programs to run. I hope I know why...
