"F1" required to start XP?
Finally got new XP HOME PC built; Pentium, Soyo MB, 120gHD, .....
By loading a legal copy of "XP HOME OEM" I had bought - I was able to load WINDOWS XP HOME onto this new PC. On odd result: When you quit, leave WINDOWS XP, and shut-down - all fine. When you re-power and boot back up, PC runs thru normal quick MB BIOS stuff - and then STALLS, asking for a "F1" to continue, or a "DEL" to go to BIOS Setup. How do I get rid of the need to stop and wait for an "F1", before WINDOWS XP HOME (OEM) starts? Help ...retired in FL Fred |

a suggestion
hey there,
ive never heard of this problem but ill try to help you out anyways. when it does this go into your BIOS and check your boot up options. i dont know what your options will be because every computer is different. but look for something out of place or try new settings in your boot up options. if i had to guess thats what i would think the problem would be. i hope i helped and if not just reply cuz me or someone else will reply. pcwiz |

i have that thingy b4, but it was more of a message "CMOS error, press F1 to continue"
and that happened after a long time. i believe u have to configure your BIOS properly, turn off auto detect and type the manual parameters. that way it will boot faster and they wont ask u to F1 i think. |

You may have a dead motherboard battery. Soyo is out of the motherboard business and what you have may be old stock, or one with poor quality control. Their last batch of motherboards has been having a very high defect rate.

XP vs "F1"
I did go thru the Soyo BIOS setup - fairly quickly. There was a
set "auto" somewhere. My MB is a "new" 5/2004 Tigerdirect.com Soyo with a 2.7g Pentium 4 chip. I've got (1) Western Digital 120g HD as master on IDE1, and (1) Samsung do-everything DVD/CD as master on IDE2. The MB layout is the larger ATX form. The new case has the ATX 425watt power supply - with the 2nd new ATX 12v plug - that plugs into center area of MB. (besides the large power plug on the edge of MB) I was surprised to see MB knew the time & date exactly to almost the second - on first boot up. .......... I'll start checking SOYO BIOS Setup ........... to find anything that would cause the "Hit F1 to Continue" message, at the end of bootup - before WINDOWS XP HOME (OEM) starts. Is your exact processor supported on that motherboard with your exact bios revision? The only 2.7 GHz P4 I know of is a Celeron or a Pentium M.

I don't know if this helps or not... but when I built my system I had a similar stall. It was all because I never confirmed the CPU in the BIOS. It was properly identified in the BIOS and in Windows, but for some reason I had to set the CPU as well, the CPU. I know this is very vague but it's all I can remember since this all happened a year ago.

XP Home "Start" vs F1
Newly built PC - runs:
MB is a "Soyo SY-P4X400 Dragon Lite", with mPGA Socket 478. Chip cpu is a "Celeron 2.7ghz". I bought the MB, cpu, and video board last 4/2004 - from good old Tigerdirect - as a package deal. Then it has been on shelf awaiting my build. So far so good - EXCEPT, at power up/boot - it stops in boot with "Hit F1 to continue, or Hit DEL to go into BIOS". I want it to just automatically fall into Windows XP Home. Fred .......Spring Hill, FL |

Clear your CMOS using the JP5 jumper with the computer unplugged from the AC power, fire it up, go into the bios setup, and load defaults. Then reset the date and time, save and exit.

I had the same problem after installing a Promise Ultra card in a Dell. Flashed the BIOS and problem went away.
