Error while trying to create a System Restore Point

In CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, I click on the SYSTEM RESTORE tab and get:

An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,ControlRunDll
"C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl,system"

My system is a Celeron 2.6 system that runs WinXP sp2 which was "recovered" from a WINXP sp2 system which used to run on an AMD 1.1 Duron system.

What I've been able to find points at spyware or a virus. Run virus and spyware scans.

I have absolutely no idea how, but in the last few days I manged to pick up a virus. My AVG caught the virus and quarantined it but obviously not fast enough.
Some how the virus managed to damage system files, which in turn caused outlook express to open ok but very slowly, I lost the ability to use the search function and when I tried to do a system restore it wouldn't start at all.
I disabled system restore, ran all of the scans Virus and spyware and then found that system restore could not be re-enabled. I did a repair install of XP and everything is working perfect again and all scans are clean.
My advice to you is to do the same, boot your machine from your XP disk and select install XP, the installation will detect an old version of XP and give you the oportunity to repair it, instruct windows to repair XP and sit back and let it do it's thing.

Fixed

I was a little over-zealous with Spybot, Adaware, and SpySweep...I deleted ALL the files they marked asa s suspect -I should have made sure none were system files. Apparently the files needed for Restore Point were deleted by me. I restored the missing files from my system disk - there was no need to restore the whole system. Everything is working fine now.

Glad to hear it, you were luckier than me because I was not being told what files were missing or damaged, hence the reason for the full repair/install.
