Cannot install Xp
I need some help here?
I am trying to install Xp home on my old 98test pc and I cannot? The disk is an "upgrade" cd and I chose to do a full install but I can't I boot it fron the cd and it loads all drivers and when it gets to "starting windows" it hangs or blue screens The blue screen has ***stop 0x0000007E (0xc000001D,0x8o86F72c,0xF79381Do,0xF7937EDo) Now here is the spec's Chaintech m/b 7VIF4 Amd 2400xp cdrom Sony cdrx22 WD 40g h/d 512ddr 2100 I had win98se on this rig and it would blue screen sometimes often or hang so I changed the ddr and was fine.... Now when I boot from the cdrom It loads all drivers then goes to start windows and hangs ....cdrom stops spinning I disabled most all options in the bios like chache ecc checking....caching or shadowing but I am stumped here.... I went to chaintechs site and re-read the manual and it appears I have all the jumpers right and everything either enabled or disabled correctly but not sure..... What aM I doing wrong here? I did try another xp cd and changed the drives.....no luck

Try replacing the RAM. WinXP is a little more fussy about the quality of the RAM than Win98SE was.

going to go try that again.... the ddr in it now is generic and I have a stick of PDP to put in it....
I get as far as "setup is starting windows" and thats it.... edit....Okay put in the PDP ddr400 and same thing.....I am thinking of just putting the hardrive in another pc and setup xp....I am sure this is motherboard related? Last edited by MaxRat; 05-10-2005 at 06:11 PM. Reason: adding too... |

I ruled out the H/D....
I put the H/D in my daughters pc ( M7VITpro, 2400xp) in it loaded xp right off the bat. Now I am hoping I can just put the drive back in the other pc and it will fire up and I can load the M/B drivers and go from there.... Okay I put the H/D back in and it booted...cool huh! well when I put in the M/B drivers (via) it crashed....then I restarted it several time and it was ok... still won't take the drivers...then it stopped booting....it gets to a black screen asking you to choose which mode and when I do It freezes...H/D led blinks once and quits... I changed the P/S and no luck now I'm using KillDisk again..... The M/B detects the drive but it's like it can access it? Any Ideas...I'm stumped Last edited by MaxRat; 05-10-2005 at 09:17 PM. I also changed the H/D for testing....
That did not change anything...I also noticed as it boots from the cd and loads drivers the H/D led is not active...It will blink once or twice but thats all...??? |

0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.) A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

That website describes common blue screens and how to properly troubleshoot them. |

This is what you should do:
Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console. When prompted, type the Administrator password. At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command. Then type and pres Enter on this three commands: 1. FIXMBR: Repairs the master boot record of the partition boot sector. 2. CHKDSK /F : Checks a disk and displays a status reportand /F fixes the problem. 3. FORMAT C: /Q /FS:NTFS : Formats a disk. If your computer can not boot from a CD-Rom create a 6 floppy disk set that corresponds to your version of Windows XP. CLICK HERE Then you can try installing your OS again. And if this fails I say that there is faulty with your HDD or IDE cable!!! |

Macko.....
Thanks but I CANNOT get that far.... As in the 1st. post it does this... I boot from the cd... 1st thing happens is windows is setting up file needed.... goes to " system is starting windows" then freezes or blue screens... These are the very 1st two steps in installing windows...It never gets to the next option to select anything...format....repairs or any such.... I have changed everything but the board......no work...swaped board and it loads windows just fine..... Basically what it's telling me is windows loaded drivers to the memory but when it went to start windows it could not find the drivers it tried to store in the memory?....I changed the ram twice...but it could also be defective L2 chache...which I disabled...or bad video ram...well time to opt for a video card and retest... Replace your IDE cable from your hard drive to the Primary IDE channel.

You can then try those two sugestions(macroman, alfie) and I would recommend memory test and you are already on trace for video test, maybe even try HDD test(download from yours HDD manufacturer).
And for memory test go here:http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp |

(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article, or see Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit, p. 1548.) Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems (e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card). |

I changed and tested everything....
I changed the Cd-rom (new one), memory ( changed twice) , I even changed the cpu ( 1.2 duron to a 2400xp) I even put the H/D in my daughters pc and loaded windows to it without a hitch...so thats out....I did not change the IDE cable but strongly doubt that is the problem...but will try it sometime.... |

Right about now, it's pointing toward the motherboard. It's a Chaintech and Via - not exactly the world's most solid setup. Have you tried it both with and without a video card? The onboard video might be flaky and putting an AGP card in will disable it.

I did Not try using a video card yet...
I think this board is flaky at best....I got it new and it had win98se loaded to it.. About 1 out of 5 times it would blue screen on start-up and sometimes it would hang-up while you were doing something...I thought it was a 98 stability problem.... other than that is was fine... I have to get a Agp card to try.... Gonna get the one glc recomended.... Oh by the way...I am on that pc NOW...I put the board from my sig in here ( Went DFI on the pc in sig!) Loaded windows XP fine and all updates....only problem I encountered was loading the M/D drivers... Couldn't load the ikernal.exe for the Nvidia driver... actually it said it couldn't move it to program files...but installed it anyway somewhere....checked it everything works perfect.... I will retry the Chaintech board in a few days and post back...I will let you all know just how many pieces it ends up in If I can't get it to work ![]() Thanks.....Terry |
