Virus Messed my stuff up
I recently got a virus, I think from accidentally clicking on a popup link, and now the computer is pretty messed up. I'm running XP pro, and I've used Mcaffee to clean everything. I've updated it and upon subsequent scans it finds no viruses.
The problem is that the virus(es) took away my icons and background pic on my desktop. Most programs will run if I use the task manager and manually browse for the program file (except Internet Explorer). There is also no "start button" or menu bar present at the bottom. Can anyone give me some tips? I can't open IE so I can't get online on that computer, although it is connected. |

Open Windows Explorer with the Windows key and the letter E. Make sure your folder options are set to show hidden and system files and extensions for known file types are NOT hidden, go to documents and settings, your login username, desktop. If there is a hidden file in there named desktop.ini, delete it and reboot.

Thanks for the replies. It wouldn't let me open windows explorer so that is out. What is the best way to boot up in safe mode and do a system restore?

The background pic I get is a blue screen with a white font that says I am infected with some virus. I believe it is a false message though. When the virus first infected my system, I got all kind of warnings about a virus and that I need to download all this different software, etc. It was all fake. It also redirected my internet explorer home page to some page on my harddrive that the virus had planted.
My virus scan shows nothing now, and spybot and adaware also show nothing. If I can do system restore should I? I read that some viruses hang out in the system restore files. |

Ok...
I booted into safe mode and it basically did the same thing. It gave me no background/desktop picture, and did not give me any icons or a menu bar. I can open task manager and that's it. |

I have a friends pc over here and its doing the same thing. Can get task mgr open and tried running %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe but all that happens is a window pops open but nothing is displayed in it. Cant type in the window or anything. Its says system restore is running but you cant restore it.
Any ideas Last edited by Sumdumgi; 05-13-2005 at 09:27 PM. |

in that case it isnt the windows screen at all heh, just a STOP error. what is the exact wording and numbers u see on the blue screen? try starting a new user account to see if the problem remains |

Its not the screen of death. Its just a window that opens like its the restore program but its blank. Safe mode, normal, diff users, it doesnt matter, same thing.

My comment was directed to the thread originator. My suggestion for deleting desktop.ini applies to that situation.

It won't let me run explorer.exe or find desktop.ini. It's weird, some programs, even though I'm looking at the file, return an error message that says "file not found." Other programs run fine from the task manager. Basically, right now, task manager is all I've got.
I've got other logon id's but it never makes it past "loading pref's" with them. |

Unfortunately, it may be time for a nuke and pave.
