run slow/ no restore point

hi folks hope you can help with this one. ive got xp installed and for some reason my comp as suddenly started running really slow it also wont let me do a restore point any more.
also when i type in msconfig it tells me it cant find file.
also ive been told to shut off some progs at start up but dont know which ones to shut off or where they are.

can any recomend a good book on troubleshooting my comp as im still new to them and need something to read when boss isnt around

That sounds like some malware has infected your system try to clean it with antivirus and antispyware!!!
For troubleshooting try windows help and support, KB, MSDN library etc!!!

thanks for the help tried a spyware program. it found 759 items which as helped a lot. but still cant do restore point or find ms config

You may have to do a repair reinstall of Windows - but before you do, you need to scan with more scanners for more viruses, trojans, and spyware.
