can't see fat32 from slave or external enclosure

i'vwe got a pc at work that i have had no luck with getting a slaved fat32 to work for access on a shuttle w/cel 1.7 and xp home.
i tried to access the same drive from an external enclosure on my home pc with abit ath/2500 and xp home. no go there either but it shows up in disc mgmt on both pc's as healty fat32 40 gig.
what gives???

p.s. these hdd's in question have win98se on them. is that why xp won't let me read them to back up data?
i know that xp doesn't mind another drive with a copy of xp on it as i have my xp os backed up on a slaved drive.

when i right click on the drive, all i get in the list is the option to delete partition.
maybe i would be better off installing the drive alone and booting to dos and deleting the windows directory to remove the possible conflicting operating system? [which i don't need anymore anyways??]

I always backup my full system(clone) to an enclosured 2.5" inch HDD and I also use it as a mobile storage and store necessary files that I need to transfer but I don't get a conflict between two HDDS. But both are NTFS. Try to access it in dos prompt.(e.g d:\)

that would be another way to see if the conflict is win98 on the drive. i'll have to try to slave it on my xp sys but....do i get the chance to startup in dos on a xp loaded c drive using the f8 key on startup??

edit...forgot i could use a boot floppy to load dos

You can't load DOS in Windows XP. I didn't mean that you should load from DOS. I mean access your HDD through Command Prompt. Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. But you can try if you can try to access the HDD in DOS.

To create a boot disk:
a) Insert a floppy disk
b) Right Click on Floppy Drive
c) Select Format
d) Then choose to create a boot disk

Exclamation

Try to recover your files with PC inspector then you will probably have to reformat your HDD to get extra space or extra partition!!!

GoBack has conflicts with partition magic 8.0, unless you disable it before performing a partition modifying operation in PM 8.0. Considering PM 8 is so popular I suggest everyone reads the manual for it and GoBack before performing an operation.
