Win XP Accounts Effecting Printing

Hi All,

I have a Windows XP Home PC with 4 users set-up on it. The main user has admin rights to the PC and can print OK to the installed printer.

The other 3 users have limited accounts so they cannot change passwords etc, but a limited account also prevents them from printing. If I change their accounts to an admin one they they can print fine, change it back to limited and the printer refuses to print in MS Office but you can do a test page, clean the cartridges OK.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Keith

Go to Printers and Faxes, right-click on the printer, and select Properties. Go to the Security tab. Under the permissions for Everyone, make sure all the permissions are set to "Allow."

Thanks for the reply. On my printer settings I do not have a security tab - is there any other way to change it?

Thanks again,

Keith

XP Home - log in as Administrator in safe mode. Then you will have the security tab.

Or you can disable Simple File Sharing in Folder Options instead. For some reason SP2 hides the Security tab is SFS is enabled.

You can't disable simple file sharing with XP Home.

How to Disable Simple File Sharing in Windows Xp Home Edition

Sometimes, you might want to change the security or permissions on a folder in Windows XP Home Edition. You will right click on the folder and select Properties, and under the Security tab you might expect to see something like you would see in Windows 2000 - a list of Users and checkboxes for Allow and Deny. However, you won't see this, because Windows XP uses something called "Simple File Sharing." You can disable it in XP Professional, but not XP Home. Apparently, XP Home users aren't to be trusted with all that power. Fear not, there is a way around this (even if it is tedious).

Steps

1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, follow these steps.

2. Before you see the Windows XP logo, hold down the F8 key.

3. Select Safe Mode.

4. Login in as Administrator. You'll get a warning about running in Safe Mode. Click Yes.

5. Find the folder whose permissions you wish to change, right click on that folder, and select Properties.

6. Voila. You can change all the properties of the folder just like you would in Windows 2000.
