fatal exception error in VXD hidvkd(06)
I got this Fatal exception error after reloading Win98 on a comp. (There are more details in the error code.) After some searching I found that hidvkd is the keyboard driver... The comp has since reloaded fine and is continuing the setup.
Should I be worried? I'm wondering if maybe there was a key being pressed or something that caused the error... and its just a one time thing... I am giving the computer to a friend who needs just basic office/internet/email capabilities and is not tech savvy in the least. I don't want her to be stressing out over error messages popping up in the future!

You are right that it's a keyboard driver: in this case, for USB keyboards. If the error doesn't show up again, it's probably not much to worry about - perhaps a case of less-than-perfect hardware detection.
If you want to see a detailed chart of the different USB drivers for Windows 98, you can check out this link from Microsoft's Win98 Resource Kit (scroll down to the section labeled "Human Interface Device Drivers" http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...t6/wrkc28.mspx Windows 98se got a little better at USB than Win98 original, and Windows XP probably does the best job with such devices of the various versions. Best of luck . . . Gary |

Hey Gary,
Thanks for your reply... I ended up keeping that computer, and giving her a slightly better comp... The original comp has some weird dongles that I didn't have drivers for, and kept showing some warnings in the control panel... so I'm gonna keep that and maybe work on it some more. That Win98 resource kit looks like an interesting page... I'll check it out in more detail when I have more brain power... I'm currently working on spyware/virus removal! Incidentally, I think that's the page that came up in google when I was searching for info about the error which led me to believe it was a keyboard driver prob!

The easiest fix is use a PS/2 keyboard.

EDB,
I've also seen this error happen when the actual USB ports are messed up. The machine I was working on would not boot (it would hang during the loading of VXD xxxxxx) until I disabled the USB on the motherboard. Glad you got it working, but just an FYI. |
