Runtime Error 216

I have a friend who is experiencing errors when they try to launch a program. The program is RealFrench by http://www.tandem-verlag.de only I don't speak German.

Whenever they try to launch the program they receive "Runtime Error 216 at xxxxxxxx". EventViewer logs an Application Event ID 1000.

The program itself does not install any files but does make a few registry changes. Everything else runs from the CD.

As a precaution this machine has been AdAwared, SpyBoted, had a full AVG virus scan run and all were clean. EasyCleaner has also been run to check the registry for errors.

I am going to call round tonight to and try System File Checker and maybe copying the CD to the hard drive and attempting to run from there but other than that I'm running short of ideas.

Suggestion gratefully accepted.

OS is WinXP SP2 on a 3GHz P4 with 512MB RAM

Thanks

The only two things I came up with for the runtime error 216 is if you are running the Oakley SmartWheel version 1.0 mouse driver or if you have the SubSeven Trojan virus.

BTW. I have run into issues using EasyCleaner with Windows XP.

I also came across those but the machine is clean. I will run SwatIt as well as a double check but I am fairly certain this isn't the problem.

I am aware that EasyCleaner breaks the Windows Help system but that isn't a problem to me. Are there any other issues with EasyCleaner?

Other than the Help file issue I had problems with the search feature that i suspect was related to easy Cleaner.

Your event viewer gives an event 1000 ID which covers a broad area. What does it say under description? That may help nail it down.

The description is as follows.

"Faulting application rlf.exe, version 6.0.0.491, faulting module rlf.exe, version 6.0.0.491, fault address 0x00003632."

The address si always the same.

Hmm, it tells us that rlf.exe, most likely the Real French .exe is not executing. Like we didn`t know that.

Everything I look at still points to the Sub seven virus. Even though your AVG scan comes up clean it would help eliminate this possibility by running a search for msrexe.exe or any instances of it in your registry.

It's also possible that the program needs an update to be compatible with SP2.

GLC - It is the latest available version and runs on other SP2 machines.

SFC found a few dlls which needed replacing.

I found out that AVG, AdAware and Spybot were all out of date as he is on dial-up but had it set to never dial a connection therefore updates were never downloaded.

I installed SwatIt and updated AdAware and Spybot but none of these found anything. I left AVG downloading Version 7 and am waiting to hear from him about the results of a full scan.

I could find no file or reference to a file msrexe.exe

I'm running out of ideas now.

Thanks

Ok, I`m sure you`ve tried uninstalling the program, manually checking and cleaning any remnants from the Programs folder and any registry entries and then re-installing after a reboot.

At this point I would try running the program in another mode. Try working your way down through W2k, W98, ME and see if this helps. Make sure your video drivers are updated. I see a lot of runtime 216 errors related to other software. Try removing any software that is uneeded or may have caused problems prior to this and manually remove directories and registry entries. Trim your start up folder to the bare minimum with msconfig.

Several times.

Disabling all the startup items also didn't help and neither did the video drivers.

I'm going to lay this to rest now as one of the unsolved.

Thanks for your time.
