XP Install ?

If you have ME and purchase the XP Pro Upgrade, can you do an install without ME on the system?

My hard drive died and I need to get a new one, and at this point I would like to upgrade to XP Pro.

Will the XP install just ask for the ME disk as verification?

Just a note my ME is an upgrade disk, but I have the 98 full version disk form previous upgrade of ME. Does it matter?

yes, just go into your bios make your cd rom the device to boot to, put the xp cd in your cd rom, and follow the prompts. very easy to do, no it wont ask u for the ME cd.
all u need in order to use the xp pro upgrade disk is to have a previous version of windows installed, so since u r buying a new hard drive, just install your win98 cd first, then run the winxp cd, and delete the win98 OS, and do a clean install if win XP pro

if your gonna buy a hard drive, look into getting a OEM copy of windows xp with it. my OEM copy went for $149 back in 2002 when i built my comp. save any future hassle when you can't find your original windows CD

The XP Pro upgrade, Academic version is only $82.49 at Newegg. It is a full version (as are all upgrade versions). During the installation process you will need to "show" the computer a legit copy of an earlier version of Windows. It can be 98, Me, 2000 or XP Home. You just put it in the CD drive for recognition, remove it when told to and reinsert the Upgade disk to continue the install. In order to qualify for the Academic version, you need to be a college level student or a teacher. If you're a student you'll need to provide your student id # and school name at the time you checkout the order.

if you are a student, i would also check with your college or university. when i was in college, i was able to get win2000 upgrade and winxp pro upgrade for $25 each (both were legal copies of the operating systems). this was back in 2000-2001 though. just a thought.

My wife is a student taking her MBA classes and I was going to get the Student version.

I need to get a new hard drive and want to use a fresh install of XP. When XP asks for a previous version, can I use the ME Upgrade disk, or do I need to use the 98 disk?

Any recomendations on HD? I was looking at an 80 GB Western Digital 7200 rpm 8 mb cache at newegg for $60.

I looked on Newegg for the student version and can't find it. Can someone post a link?

Thanks

WD drives have had too many failures reported here of late. Seagate is quiter and has a better warranty without the failures.

Don't know if the ME upgrade disk will work cuz I've only used a 98se full version when I did my daughter's comp.

The link is in my earlier post.

I didn't see any Seagate HD's around 80 gb 7200 rpm and 8 mb cache and IDE drive? Do they make one, or is there another choice for HD?

What about Maxtor?

Seagate has apparently discontinued the 80Gb, 8Mb cache units. Next one up is the 120Gb. Maxtors are good too but it's hard to beat a 5 year warranty. Seagate 120:
