C:\windows\temp\aawtemp\

While running my AV program I noticed I had thousands of files in this folder. Can I delete these files without doing any harm? What are they for? I noticed that the contents of many of the folders, though they had different numbers, seem to be redundant.

Generally speaking you should be able to delete them.

When in doubt move the files to a different folder. If the pc doesn't crash and burn after a few days then zap em..

Thanks. I'll try that. If I do have problems do I just restore them back to the same file?

If they are in c:\windows\temp, get rid of them AND everything else in there. Safe mode if necessary.

I put a copy in my docs & deleted everything & then defragged. No problems so far. Defrag restarted about 20 times. The size of the aawtemp file was about 750meg. It's safe to delete it from my docs? The only thing left in TEMP is ZLT060d6 & it's denying access. I can get that before I shut down. Thanks.

It is safe to delete ANYTHING that winds up in c:\windows\temp - if it's in use it won't delete. Don't worry about that one ZLT file, that's Zone Alarm and it will take care of itself.

Thanks to both of you. I've had this thing thoroughly screwed up several times so I tread lightly these days.

Now that you've gotten rid of the file, you should do a disk cleanup to delete other temp files and then another defrag.

I did that. So far, after all garbage that I've cleaned out ( including a few programs that I don't use), I've gone from over 70k files to about 26k files on my HD. Now, instead of taking all night to run my AV, it takes about an hour. I think I freed up over 1 gig of drive space. My computer isn't so easily confused now. Thanks.
