Hi friends..
Hope you guys are doing well. Here I have an issue with Internet Explorer 5.5. OS -> Windows ME..I had recently removed a search spyware that automatically loaded a search page regardless of whatever home page was set in Internet Options. I finally got rid of it using a tool called CWShredder v2.14. Later i noticed that i could not type any web address in the Address Bar of IE!! I am not sure whether CWShredder took off any of my Windows system files... How i browse these days is...open Google from favorites and then go from there. This is very frustrating and indeed time-consuming It does go into other websites this way (i mean, from the Favorites Menu), but the moment an address is typed in the address box and "Go" is clicked..IE just locks up and shows up in Task Manager as "Not Responding"..If End Task is selected, then the particular window closes..But this does not affect other instances of IE that are running concurrently...Hey there is something else that i noticed..When i was editing a playlist in Windows Media Player 9..It froze..Only the program..I end-tasked it, and everything else was fine..does that have to do something with IE 5.5? i have tried >> -reinstalling IE 5.5 and also IE 5.5 SP2 (still the same problem) -System Restore (Successful, but not good enough) -repairing IE from Add/Remove Programs (IE 5.5 and IE 5.5 SP2) -restoring the previous version of Internet Explorer(from Add/Remove Programs) -soft reinstall of Windows ME -Reinstalled Microsoft Script,Java runtime, and Macromedia Flash Player (just to make sure that everything is ok!) I know that there are good browsers out there such as Opera and Firefox..IE 5.5 has never given me a problem and so, i wish to stick to IE. I feel its much better than IE 6.0! I'd really appreciate if you could suggest a possible solution to fix this issue(Other than a full format and reinstall of Windows ME).. Thanks.. Ed

Hmm - just to see, try visiting Windows Update, now that you've already tried reinstalling things. I seem to remember there was a patch that involved the address bar for IE 5.5 on WinMe.
Other than that, I'm hoping maybe glc has seen this one before . . . Gary |

I avoid ME. However, I do recommend IE6 for ME, it seems to work better than 5.5. It's 98 where IE6 can be a pain.

Try the IE fix utility, you can download it here.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm this tool worked great for me on a similar problem with IE using ME.

Have you been to Windows Update since you loaded IE 6? (or 6.x?) There have been a fair amount of patches, several that update a problem with the url.dll file - which I'm wondering might be the cause of your trouble.
I find that often when I update and older version component (such as IE), I have to revisit Windows Update several times [and with a reboot inbetween, usually, when IE is involved] - because sometimes the patches need patching ![]() Other than that, see if there's anything in the "over-the-top" thread that you might want to try [the thread mentions two different strategies] http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846 Best of luck . . .
