computer freezes
About two months ago my computer started freezing up. This only happens maybe one or twice a week. When this happens, I loose all control. The mouse is completely gone off the screen. Pressing Control-Alt-Delete does nothing. I am forced to manually switch off the computer. After a re-boot, I start IE6 again, and then Outlook Express, where I get a message that Outlook Express was not properly shut down. So then I close it, and re-open Outlook Express. Everything works fine again for a few days, until it happens again. I am running XP Pro with all the updates including SP2. I have AVG which I update daily. I also run Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy
about every three days. Spyware Blaster is also loaded on the computer. About once a week I do that scan at Housecall (Trend Micro). The only thing that I can think about is that also about two months ago, I also was experimenting with Outlook which is also on the computer as part of Microsoft Office. I started the program and was considering using it, instead of Outlook Express, but deceided to stay with OE, so I have OE set as the default for my mail etc. This freeze up is starting to get annoying, even if only once or twice a week. Any suggestions ? Many thanks ! Mike

You seem to have your bases covered with Ad-aware, spybot, AVG, etc.. What about having some hardware issues like maybe everheating assuming you leave you machine on for extended periods. Or the problem might be more specific to Outlook? Have you by chance updated office or installed its service packs?

edrod13, Thanks for the reply. The computer freeeze happened this evening after the computer was only on about ten minutes. After I manually turned it off and on again, it has been fine for the past hour or so, so I do not believe heat is a problem. I have not updated anything concerning Outlook because I am not using it at the time. Is there a way to remove Outlook from the computer ? Could that be the problem ?

Update #2. When it froze this last time, I heard a constant beep until I turned the computer off. I forgot to mention that when it froze in the past, sometimes I would also get that constant beep until I turned it off.

The constant beeping sure sounds like it's a heat related problem. Are you sure the CPU heatsink fan is spinning?
Does the case have any case fans installed? What kind of computer is this? Home built or store bought name brand? Try running the computer with the case sides off and have a small fan blowing into it. Cricket

Hi Cricket. Have been using the computer for about almost an hour now, no problem. The fan is operating. It is a case mounted fan at the back of the computer that draws air into the computer, then there is a green shield or duct that funnels the air over the CPU. It is a Dell Dimension 4700 bought about 6 months ago. If it was a heat problem, wouldn't the computer freeze up again real soon after I started it back up ? Like I said above, I am now using the computer for about an hour now and no problems yet. Also on past freeze ups, about 16 in the past two months, I only heard that constant beep about three times out of the 16 freeze ups.

If it's not a heat related problem, it might be hardware related.
When the system beeps, are the beeps coming from the stereo speakers or from inside the case? Cricket

Have you tried to contact Dell about it yet? It's possible the computer will still be under some kind of warrenty. A lot of companies have 1 year warrenties on thier pre builds.
You might have a faulty power supply or a defective motherboard. Or you could have one of a hundred other things wrong. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with the software or with the updates. I've had computers beep at me before after I bulit them before the operating system is installed, so I'm sure it's a hardware issue, but wait for some more ideas from other members. Visit this website http://support.dell.com/ or call 1-800-WWW-DELL and see what they recomend before you go messing with anything on the inside. They might just ask you to send it to them and they will give you a brand new one. Just be sure to back all your documents and other files, and of course delete anything you don't want them to see. Like pictures of you in the bathtub when you were 2 years old. That would be embarrasing.

Hi Cricket--The long continous beeb comes from the computer, not the speakers. This has not happened for the past two days now, either freezing or the beep ????
It kind of seems like I am getting STUCK on certain sites, and then the computer freezes. Does that make any sense ? The next time it happens I will e-mail Dell and see what they have to say. Thanks to all that offered suggestions !! Still open for more. |

I don't know if anyone answered this, but you can absolutely uninstall Outlook. Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components.

AlwaysUp, I do not see OUTLOOK listed there. I do see Outlook Express, but not Outlook. I believe Outlook was part of XP Office, and not XP the operating system ??

i would also recommend calling up dell and see as was stated if the possibility exist to gat a new replacement then i would go for that instead of operating on the edge every couple of days, hours or weeks. You got nothing to loose.

This link is a MS KB article explaining how to remove Outlook from Office 2000. I'd bet a similar method followed would uninstall from XP, but I'm not positive as I did a custom install of my Office XP and never installed Outlook. I think if you really want to try an uninstall of Outlook that this would work. Post back if this does or does not if you attempt. |
