Making Windows hardware independent

Is there any way to make a Windows 98 installation on a hard disk run on another PC?

I sometimes have a requirement to rebuild a customer’s hard disk i.e. reinstall Windows and apps. Whilst doing this at my workbench, I would like to “loan” a Windows HD with apps installed that I have created on another PC and install on the customer’s PC whilst repairing/replacing their Windows installation.

Instead of loaning the customer a full PC, it would be much easier just to switch HDs.

i don't know if this is the answer you want but here's a tip. you can make a server mainly for windows installation (cab) files and you can install this over a network. and this is useful when you have multiple machines to setup. if you want more information you can check how to make a server in pcmech

Build up a hard drive, then remove the ENUM key and shut it down.

GLC's reply holds true for those installs where you have support CDs for the motherboards and other hardware that isn't covered by the 98 resident stuff.
The downside is the problem of re-establishing the custoner's machine when the customer has lost support programs and documentation.
It doesn't happen often, but it can cost a customer the machine as they had it set up.
