Windows Media Player 10

I am having some difficulties playing DVD in Windows Media Player 10 and cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. I am able to play a dvd, but there is no sound or video. Any help would be appreciated. If any other info is needed please let me know. Thanks

theres a posibility that you don't have the right decoder for your WMP10 i have downloaded a software called DVD Decoder Pack. i'm not sure its for free but i got in a P2P site. i download this and i didn't get any problems since then. also you can try microsoft forums if you have time.

What software player were you using for DVDs before you installed WMP 10 ?

I installed Intervideo windvd and using the utility from microsoft that checks the decoders said the intervideo codec was compatible, I set it as the preferred codec and still have the same problem.

Windows media players don't have dvd decoders, they borrow them from the dvd software player you have installed, in your case WIN DVD.
I don't understand what you mean by "I am able to play a DVD but there is no sound or video."
Does the drive spin up?
Does the drive light come on?
Do you simply go to the DVD menu and remain there?
Does the media player simply leave you with a blank screen?
When you use WIN DVD does nothing happen at all?

i know this may not be the answer you are looking for, but if its working in other programs, why not just use those, especially since they are made for the sole purpose of playing DVD's

Uninstall WIN DVD reboot and reinstall it.

edit: Somehow you've run afoul of Win DVD's extensive feature list.
If going through the Help and the Read Me doesn't tell you what settings to change then reinstalling will do it.
When you're up and running again make a note of all the default settings so that you can spot any changes in the future.

What you need is a Codec:
Codecs determine the size of a file, the bit rate of a stream, and the way encoded video and audio content looks and sounds. The codecs do this by compressing an audio or video source during encoding and then decompressing the audio or video during playback.

A codec is an algorithm, which can be thought of as a "list of instructions," that identifies the method used to compress data into smaller byte sizes. By following these instructions, applications such as encoders and players can reliably compress and decompress data.

Codec packs are fine but have you checked the WIN DVD settings and tried reinstalling the player yet?
