XP install over Windows ME???
Is it possible to install XP pro (full edition) over Windows ME instead of a clean install of XP.
If so how do I go about it. If it is possible, the hard drive I want to install it on is partitioned (2 x 40gig partitions) Can I install XP over win ME on the C:\ partition and use NTFS on that partition and leave the D:\ partition FAT32 or do I have to change the D:\ also to NTFS. If D:\ has to be changed to NTFS, how do I do that. I didn't really want to do a format of the C:\ drive at this time but only want one OS on the computer and get rid of ME. Any suggestions welcome.

Put the XP CD in when in Windows (don't boot with it) and see if it will offer to upgrade. Do not convert either partition till you are sure the upgrade is stable - if need be, XP can be uninstalled and reverted back to ME as long as the partitions are still FAT32. You can convert each drive letter separately from within XP at a command prompt - syntax is CONVERT X: /FS:NTFS (where X is the drive letter).

When XP first came out I did the upgrade thing from ME, but very quickly ended up reformatting the HD, and installing XP from scratch, and I believe many others found out that upgrading from ME to XP just didn't go so well. It worked but it just wasn't running well, in fact all I really remember is that the PC was just slower and less responsive and several programs had to be reinstalled anyways, so I just went ahead and reformatted and it was a very good move because then the PC worked well.

Thanks glc will try that. not sure if I booted from XP cd or not but options I got was to either install XP or Repair the installation.
I chose "Install XP" I will try again later today making sure I use the xp cd in windows and see what happens. Maybe I should have chosen the "Repair" option. Thanks KT for the info. I guess I can always format/clean install as a last resort. Last edited by needhelp; 06-05-2005 at 08:44 PM. |

Sounds like you did boot from the XP cdrom, but I'm suprised you got the repair option cause usually the boot program detects an already installed XP load and gives U the repair option, It would be interesting to see what it would have done if U choose repair, maybe that would actually do the upgrade and perhaps better that the doing it from windows way that I did originally... anyways from windows you will definately get the option to upgrade and save the ME files so you can revert back if need be..
