XP Tips / Helpful Stuff

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm

I've been searching through the 43 pages of tips for the last two hours supporting several friends using Windows XP. A very helpful collection of information that I found on Google. It might help some of you when troubleshooting XP systems.

Unattended Install Question

I am experimenting with one of the tips about unattended install:

Creating an Automated Install of WindowsXP

On the WindowsXP CD, in the SUPPORT\TOOLS directory,
there is a file called DEPLOY.CAB.

Extract the programs DEPLOY.CHM (help file) and SETUPMGR.EXE (main program)
Run SETUPMGR and answer the prompts.
This will create both a unattend.bat and unattend.txt file you can use for automated installs.
Note: The batch file might need some minor modification for file locations but it is fairly basic.

QUESTION:
I have copied the unattend.bat and unattend.txt files to the root of the CD.
Now should I modify the autorun.inf which currently reads:

[AutoRun]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

Right now if this is not modified a regular setup would run, right?
Should I modify the open= to read
Open=unattend.bat

And if I do modify that open= then what about the icon=setup.exe,0 Should that be changed or am I just trying to modify the wrong thing to make the cd boot and run an unattended intall.

The unattend.txt file looks like this:
;SetupMgrTag
[Data]
AutoPartition=1
MsDosInitiated="0"
UnattendedInstall="Yes"
[Unattended]
UnattendMode=FullUnattended
OemSkipEula=Yes
OemPreinstall=No
TargetPath=\WINDOWS
[GuiUnattended]
AdminPassword="XXXXXXXX"
EncryptedAdminPassword=NO
OEMSkipRegional=1
TimeZone=20
OemSkipWelcome=1
[UserData]
ProductID=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
FullName="Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxx"
OrgName="x"
ComputerName=XXX
[TapiLocation]
CountryCode=1
AreaCode=341
[Identification]
JoinWorkgroup=WORKGROUP
[Networking]
InstallDefaultComponents=Yes

Exclamation

When you've finished, it creates a file called unattend.txt. Since you are going to run Setup from a CD you need to rename this to WINNT.SIF. Be sure that the file does not infact end up WINNT.SIF.TXT. It MUST not end in .TXT!!!

Copy winnt.sif to the I386 directory within the local setup source!!!

And if you need any more help with this theme visit THIS
