Foldin' For PCMech!

network users win2k
i have a server setup that i, and the rest of my family, are able to copy their cds to and then listen to them on any computer in the house. i want to be able to have the "music folder" shared on the network so everyone can get to it easily. i want them to be able to play music from the server and be able to add music but i don't want to give them the ability to delete anything. if something needs to be deleted i want to be able to go in and delete it, maybe login as a different user or something, how would i do this?
i have it setup so that "Everyone" can add but not delete but how would i log on as someone else and be able to delete?

Give the Administrator full control, which should be the default anyway. That will override the "Everyone" permissions.

ok, but i do not have a password setup on the server at all. so anytime anyone wants to get into the shared folder all they need to do it type administrator and hit ok. i went to all the machines and typed this but also checked the remember my password box so it will log on as admin everytime. how would i change this and how would they logon afterwards?

You will have to setup permissions for each user by name or setup group policy for group of users for new shared folder(musical) that you made!!!

i guess each user, or each computer really, would need its own login name? i couldn't setup a "music" logon and have everyone use that?

Having the Administrator account with no password is not too wise.

yes i know that, but the only way they can get to the system is to remote in, which i do have a password on that. i'm not too worried about hackers or anything, all thats on the server is music and a few small backups....
either way.... i do have an admin password setup now, and i created a user called music, now how do i get this user to be able to add but not delete files? there is no advanced button to click to do that on this screen.... |

Configuring Share Permissions
To configure share permissions: 1. On the Sharing tab, click Permissions. 2. In the Share Permissions dialog box, click Add. 3. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, double-click the appropriate user accounts or groups (for example, the Accountants and Sales groups). 4. When you have selected all of the users and groups to which you want to assign permissions, click OK. The groups and users you added, along with the Everyone group, are displayed in the top half of the Security tab. 5. In the Name list, click each user or group one at a time, and then apply the correct permissions in the Permissions list. For example, for the Accounting group, for the Change permission, click Allow. For the Sales group, for the Read permission, click Allow. http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/window...rmissions.html Last edited by macko72; 06-11-2005 at 06:24 PM. |

yeah, i got that but its not the permissions i need. right click a folder and goto properties. you have 4 tabs, general, web sharing, sharing, and security. in the sharing tab is where that says to go, which i did but that only gives you the options of full control, read and change.
if you goto the security tab and click advanced you have many more options. in here is where the setting to allow a user to create but not delete which is what i want. how do u use them? |

The permissions on Windows 2000 systems are all selectable with two columns of boxes which are:
Allow - Grant the permission. Deny - Any denied permission for a group or user will override any allow permission, even if the user is in a group that is granted that permission. If neither box is checked, the permission is not granted for the user or group, but if the user is in another group that has the permission, it will not be denied. Normally, if a user is a member of several groups that have different levels of permissions to an object, the least restrictive permissions apply unless the user, or one of their groups have the no access box checked for that permission. Read(R) and Execute(E) - Can change sub folders, perform read operations, and execute a file. List Folder Contents - Can perfrom read and execute permissions on folders. Can view folder contents, attributes, permissions. Can synchronize and change to subfolders. Modify - Perform Read, Execute, and Write permissions along with ability to delete. http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/window...rmissions.html Last edited by macko72; 06-12-2005 at 02:56 AM. |
