When you have the user profile can't be loaded error it's usually caused by a completely filled system drive (only a few bytes free) or by restricted permissions on the path where your user profile is stored. (usually "C:\Documents and Settings\") The user you are using to login needs change permission on this folder (only for his own profile folder).

Mosquito,
I have also come across problems in NT 4.0, where the profile can not load due to registry size. Have not come across the problem in win2k yet.
But, the problem I had, to remedy it, we just bumped up the "allowed size" of the registry, and it comes up just fine.
Just something somebody might come across one day.

If the registry entry and the directory entry don't match then you will receive this error..

To find out what really happen go into your REGULAR user profile and look if this is named *.000 or *.001 etc then Open regedit and find your User profile using your USERNAME - look at the directory listed in the registry if it matches the one in C:\Documents and Settings\User - if in registry the path is located at C:\Documents and Settings\USER.000 but on your hard drive it's C:\Documents and Settings\User then when trying to login you will receive this error and that the system has logged you into a Default /new account..

Things like this will happen if you deleted USER.DAT accidentally
