Updating driver procedure
I posted earlier in the week about a problem running SW Republic Commando.
The general consensus I got was that I should update the drivers for my motherboard and graphics card. I also posted on another site that I trust for info so that is where the consensus came. My question is this: What is the procedure for doing this update and in what order should I upate. Should I update the graphics card and then the motherboard or should it be the other way around? Are there any precautions I should take before I do anything? http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=133657 Thanks to all! |

I'm not an expert but I would uninstall the video card drivers, reboot, install the MB drivers, reboot, install the new video card drivers, and reboot again.

Try the motherboard drivers first.
With the video card drivers, you will have to remove the old ones first, then install the new ones. (to remove the video card drivers, right click "my computer" > "hardware" tab > device manager... uninstall everything under "display adapters")

Force Flow - Are you referring to the BIOS? I can find an update for the BIOS on HP's website. This is an HP product by the way (Model a350y).

I would say he is referring to the chipset drivers. You would only want to update your BIOS if the description of the update indicates it will fix a problem you are having.

Here is what the HP website says about the BIOS update for my motherboard.
Fixes - Resolves Send/Don't Send error message. - Resolves incorrect display of hard disk transfer mode after Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation. - Updates Intel Microprocessor micro-code. Not having any issues regarding the first item, I don't have SP2 installed. So that leaves the last item to potentially fix my problem. (See my link in my first post in this thread please. )I have attached a screen shot of my Device Manager. In the tab that I have expanded could some one point out which of those items refers to the motherboard drivers that I need to update? Or let me know if I'm looking the in the wrong section and I'll go from there. Last edited by bucksfanjimj1; 07-10-2008 at 02:30 PM. |

That motherboard uses the Intel 865G chipset. You can download the latest chipset drivers from Intel, here's a direct link.
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...=8638&lang=eng Just run it. No need to uninstall anything. Then you should install the latest Nvidia Forceware drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.72.html Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove. Finally, reinstall DirectX using the full redistributable. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Nothing to uninstall first, just run it. |

glc - I followed your instructions to the letter. Everything seemed to go smoothly. However, I still can't open the game that started this whole quest. I did reinstall the game again this morning but no luck. I turned off Norton as well. Which I had never had to do when installing other programs. What the heck, worth a shot.
So, I'm going try to talk a co-worker into putting it on his comp to make sure it isn't the game discs. I know his comp meets if not exceeds the recommended requirements for the game. Until I can get this done I'm still looking for a solution. I do greatly appreciate everyone's help so far. Thanks, Jim |

I did poke around LucasArts' website when I first started having this problem. That was about 2 weeks ago. I could always do a little more digging, maybe something has come up since then.
