automatic updates = automatic restart?

i just woke up and found a message on my computer saying i had gotten an automatic update which required an automatic restart. is there any way to turn off the automatic restart? i don't want MS deciding when is a good time for me to restart my computer

Why not just change the Automatic Updates to "Notify me when available and I'll decide when to download." That way you can control the download and installation/restart time.

I just have them turned off altogether, and I check periodically for updates, or when I see that they have been announced. But now that I think about it, I like PRs suggestion much better.

thats probably a good idea for me, but my folks don't pay attention too much. when i am home, i can take care of it, but when i am at school, things don't get updated, so thats why i did the automatic for them. i didn't know if there was a way to just have it pop up saying "restart your computer"

thanks for the suggestions

This bugs me too. I'll see a yellow shield in my system tray and install an update. Before I know it, it bugs me RESTART your computer. *clicks restart later* Then it comes up again and again and again until you restart. I've tried killing the process in task manager but it always comes back for more until you restart.

I don't think there's a waya round it. So if you're doing work on the computer or don't want to restart, delay installing the components.

I did that for my parents once. My father uninstalled zone alarm because he thought the yellow windows update shield was an error because of it. Since then I just download updates for them manually every now and then.

You can disable the nagging reminders to restart by using the administrative templates in the group policy editor, but "disabled" and "not configured" mean 10 minutes to microsoft. So if you enable "re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations" you can set it to a maximum of 1440 minutes. Nice eh?

If you don't see the re-prompt policy you can download the latest administrative policies from microsoft, put them in your %systemroot%\inf, and use the group policy editor(gpedit.msc) to add the templates to your computer configuration.
