•128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

•Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
•CD-ROM or DVD drive
•Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

It doesnt take much to run xp, its gonna do just fine, my school runs it on p2's. It wont be the fastest thing in the world but it should work.

Make sure to give it enough RAM. XP likes its RAM.

I wouldn't suggest anything under 600MHz with 256MB. Those are the more realistic minimum requirements.

Used to run XP on a PIII 800 with 320 MB of RAM .. . actually that PC still exists and is still running XP, and it runs very smooth.
I use the classic view, though. It is less ressource hungry than the Luna look.

I have a 800 MHz PIII laptop with 320 MB ram it runs faily well with XP. I agree with RJ, the classic layout option speeds things up a bit on older systems.

I think it's possible to run WinXP on a PIII 450MHz system with at least 512MB of RAM. Trying it on a PII 300MHz even with enough RAM would probably be painful and I wouldn't even try it. Minimum I would go is PIII 600MHz as Force Flow mentioned, but with 512MB of RAM.

ive got a 10 ywear-old PIII 500 with 256Mb of ram,
it runs XP just fine ... but it is only used for playing music, e-maling and web browsing.

in conclusion it is just down to the specs and what you are using it for

For my personal machines running XP, I would not go under 512MB. But for some clients who use their machines for simple tasks such as typing, emailing, and surfing...256MB is adequate.

Again, it all depends on what you plan to use the machine for.
