Windows ME will not update?
Hi, and thanks for reading.
I just installed windows ME on an old Compaq my brother got for free from work, they got new stuff and were throwing all the old ones away. I don't have the original restore cd's, so I'm using a retail version of ME, he wanted the same OS because he's familiar with it. I'm all done, but it won't update. Never seen this before. Did M$ give up on their support for this OS? There are 2 items that don't have drivers yet, would this matter? It's a usb card and some other unknown device.

What happens when you do try to update?
Have you read through the troubleshooting section?

FINALLY ... I got an error message with some information. It used to only say Windows Updated has created an error, blah blah blah, then wanted me to click one of these links to pay for email or internet support.
After I updated to IE 6.0 and tried again it told me to check my clock. For some reason it was 6/20/2018. Not sure how that happened.Works just fine, after I set the correct year. Thanks for trying to help EzyStvy |

. . . if you have trouble with the system date at some point in the future, since the systems were fairly old, you could start by putting in a new battery for the CMOS/Bios Settings (often little coin-type CR-3032 Sony 3v batteries) - they only cost about $1.50 (USD).
. . . Gary [usually when the battery goes, the date goes back to 1980] [it also seems like it might be possible a virus could do this, and might be on a backup copy of some data you're restoring to this machine and the Win98 on in your other post . . couldn't hurt to scan, anyway] Last edited by GaryRouth; 06-21-2005 at 03:32 AM. |
