registry damage

I have a damaged registry on another computer (missing config/system) and Im not really clear on using the recovery console off the XP CD. It's OEM so will that have a recovery console? The MS KB says when it gets to the welcome to setup screen press R. But before it gets to that screen it loads all kinds of files shown in the botton off the screen so Im unclear about that...does that mean there's no turning back if i want to quit? Also, Iin the past I've not noticed a R option. Just partition /format options. So maybe R only comes with retail versions??

these files loaded are not dangerous. they only load some basic drivers to run the installation.
you can quit after you pass that stage.
