Try booting in safe mode.

Yes try safe mode first... while you in there have your Anti Virus run a full system scan. System programs that will not run can be related to a virus and your better safe than sorry.

Maybe service for defrag is stopped, check that in administrative tools services in control panel or if you have XP type msconfig in a RUN box on start and check on services tab is it running!!!

how exactly do you start in 'safe mode'? none of the links in 'admistrative tools' work...what the heck. limewire does the same thing. is there any way to just clear off everything and start all over? i'm not exactly sure where the OS disk is..but is there a way to do it w/o? anyway, sorry for the ignorance...i've got no clue about a lot of stuff on here...thanks for the help.
edit- i run a full system scan weekly and this has been ongoing for quite a while

Quote:
c:\windows\system32\defrag c:/ Or you can download a third party defrag program, which will work much better than the built-in defrag. |

had a similiar problem recently with a clients PC - after cleaning it from spyware/virus infections.
anyways - neither system restore nor defrag would work. first i tried to reinstall Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP which got system restore back up and running but not defrag. so i tried to install Diskeeper lite and do a defrag with that, however it came back with an error that it couldn't start anymore services. a quick trip to admintools > services and checked that event log was active and running. it had been disabled by all the malware, once re-enabled; everything worked. however if u can't get into everything then i recommend a full scan for malware, spyware and virus infections before even proceeding.
