how to stop users from downloading and/or installing anyhting?
ive got a family PC that everyone in the family uses, but has to be reformatted too often. Ive tried frequent spyware scans and good anti-viruses and all, but just due to user stupidity in what is downloaded and installed it still gets messed up anyway. How can I set up a machine running XP home so that no one except the administrator can download anything or install anything?

Restrict permissions, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...lesharing.mspx
What I wonted to tell that you can set permissions for each and every user on your comp or network but give only an administrator full access and control !!!

that article is about setting permissions for files and folders. I want to keep people from being able to get into and change the internet options. (i figured out how to disable downloads in internet options, but anyone can easily get back into internet options to re-enable it.

If it's a family pc, then wouldn't it work if you just simply ask? Say "Hey, don't download anything or install anything without asking me first."
Can they still install if they have a limited account?

Or if you haven't set more user names, you set password(for yours), enable guest account set password for it as well give password to them and set permisions for only that account, and every time you leave just log off from admin(yours acount) and let them to access comp with guest account and restricted permisions: (of course you will have to be owner and the eldest to be able to do that in family environment... lol ) !!! you probably need a program like VMWare, which reset all settings to default everytime you login. it is a shell/virtual machine which protects your computer from virii and unwanted installs. yet it allows the administrator to do installs and other stuffs, user cant do anything to damage or change the machine's configuration. ...BTW, it about $200 US |
