While trying to install drivers for my PCI soundcard to replace my defective onboard soundcard I encountered this problem ('NTLDR missing, Press any key to restart').
I have important documents on my desktop so I can't format the C:drive. After formatting the D:drive to install the new OS, it copies the files but does not install the OS, still showing ‘NTLDR missing’. I tried CHKDSK from the Recovery Console but it indicates both HDD partitions are ok. How do I recover my important documents on the c: drive and how do I re-install the OS? Thanks OS= WinXP HDD= 20GB C:20GB D:12GB Processor=2GB |

Are you positive you didn't leave a floppy disk in the drive?

it looks like your boot record was corrupted, tho i can't see what loading drivers would do this. first, go into the recovery console and type fixmbr and then type fixboot. try rebooting and see if that works.

Yeah Hobey, I was hoping that would not be it. I tried fixmbr and it didn't repair it. Do I use another HDD on master and my 40 GB on slave so as not to waste it or do you think there's another alternative?

Try changing the IDE cable from the Hard drive to the IDE port. I think I have seen some users on the forum complain about this error, and replacing the IDE cable solved the problem. Worth a shot.

There are the alternatives of pulling your drive and accessing it via another NT or Linux based machine by either slaving it or with a USB enclosure and then copying your documents to another drive.
Or install a parallel system on another partiton or drive and then access the files. |

How to Repair the Boot Sector:
If XP won't start it may be due to a damaged boot sector or a missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files. To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console . At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C: To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"
