I recently carried out the proceedure where you put the XP disk in a drive, open the command prompt and type sfc /scannow. This resulted in some missing files, now I usually do a repair install but on the last two occasions this has failed and I have had to re format the HDD and do a clean install.
There is obviously a way to copy the missing files from the windows disk to the installation on the C drive without doing the full monty, please can anyone tell me how to do this. |

And more about the system, AV, anti spyware, software, etc you use to try and determine why you have to do this now and then. It`s not normal for system files to just up and disappear from time to time.

Really sorry, I was not very clear with the problem, this does not happen on the same machine, it is over a period of time on different machines, different users and configurations. I just wanted to know if there is a generic instruction to tell the computer to copy the missing files ( whatever they are) from the cd to the c drive, without resorting to a repair install or a complete new install.

Running SFC /SCANNOW should replace missing system files. If you know what file is missing, and where it belongs, you may be able to extract it from the XP CD and install to your computer.

At the Command Prompt type the following (where "X" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files
copy x:\i386\[file missing] [path] more options replacing files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q310435/
