Missing Files, Need Help Bad!

I'm trying to setup a new computer for my daughter and have almost finished. One of the programs I installed is Norton System Works 2005 Premier. After running WinDoctor, a part of Norton Utilities, it shows I'm missing 2 files. One is "pctree32.dll" and the other is "learn32.dll". I can locate these files on her computer but you can't get to them using what appears to be the path given by WinDoctor. Here's what the message looks like that WinDoctor generates: C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB898458$\ORUN32.EXE Cannot access a necessary file "learn32.dll". The other missing file has the same path.

I'm able to find the missing files by going to Run and typing: C:\WINDOWS\Help\5BSI\Training.

I really need help 'cause I told her I could set this new computer up and fear I've screwed it up somehow.

The computer is an HP desktop with XP Pro SP 2.

Thanks,

Hank

Uninstall system works. It's known to cause various annoying problems.

And there's plenty more threads on the subject where that came from.

Thanks for the reply Force Flow but I'd really like for her to keep it. I use it, as well as my wife, with no major problems. Besides, there's a problem in the computer I'd like to resolve. Granted, a problem hasn't shown up yet but it might sometime in the future.

I'd uninstall the Microsoft Interactive (SBSI) training software.

Thank you very much for your post, GLC.

I finally gave up on my daughter's desk top and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. That fixed the pctree32.dll and the learn32.dll problem but created another that I won't go into on this post. I reinstalled all the software, which was considerable, and everything is working fine with the exception of the problem mentioned in the last sentence.

While I was visiting her house she ask me to look at her Sony Viao (sp.) laptop because it was running really slow. I installed Adaware and Spybot and honest to goodness removed over 1200 critical objects. Now she only has one critical object. I can't remember the name and only Spybot sees it. Sypbot will remove it but when it does her Google tool bar does not show up in IE on restart. I have Google tool bar on my computer and don't have this problem with Spybot or the tool bar.

That's interesting enough but here's the really interesting part. I installed Norton Utilities from System Works on her laptop and when I ran WinDoctor she had the same 2 files missing (pctree32.dll and learn32.dll). Her laptop is almost 2 years old and her desk top had never been started when I started to set it up on the 3rd of this month. What are the chances, two computers in the same house having identical missing files. They have never been connected together, one new out of the box and the other almost 2 years old.

She connects to the internet through a cable connection to a router and wireless to both her laptop and desktop. I installed the wireless hardware in the desktop. THe router is completely open. No password or anything else. She mounted it and installed it in her house by herself and just like many others, didn't know it wasn't safe. But again, that's another issue.

I researched your suggestion, GLC, and as best I can figure if she goes to
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWAR...09594si6.shtml

and follows directions she can uninstall Microsoft Interactive (SBSI) training software. I'm in my RV and headed to WA so can only help via email and phone. I also stumbled across a security update

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS05-031.mspx

and wondered if that would fix the missing files problem. I really don't think that has anything to do with it but though I would ask.

Sorry this is so long and hope you have time to read it.

missing files - tip

Hank,

We ran into this problem of "cannot access ..." last Friday, while working on the following:

We have a new Sony VAIO PCVRS610 desktop (sort-of-mini-tower), that came out of the box / the factory, with Windows XP Home Edition.

We installed RAM, elevating the unit to 1GB total.

We installed Windows XP Professional Upgrade.

We installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, via the Microsoft Windows Updates website.

We installed Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2004.

Upon the first run of the Norton SystemWorks One Button Checkup, approximately 116 Registry errors were found, but no Program Integrity errors; we also had some shortcut errors, and we had one web item (that never seems to go away - probably some WXP-SP2 "thing"). We clicked on the Fix button. All errors were “fixed” (except the anti-virus scan, which we are putting off for later).

After restarting the computer, we ran One Button Checkup again. This time, it found three errors in the Program Integrity category.

Here are the errors:

“C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional
\RunTime\0701\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe” cannot access
a necessary file, “mscoree.dll.”

“C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB898458$\ORUN32.EXE”
cannot access a necessary file, “learn32.dll.”

“C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB898458$\ORUN32.EXE”
cannot access a necessary file, “pctree32.dll.”

After searching on the Internet, and finding this forum, in addition to some other sites mentioning the problem; and after "fiddling around" by, for example, copying the ORUN32.EXE file here:

C:\WINDOWS\Help\SBSI\Training\

to here, replacing the existing file:

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB898458$\

because the file that had been here:

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB898458$\

had an incorrect modification date of sometime in 2001 instead of May 2005 ... so we wondered if it also had some other problem.

After that experiment and some others, we chose a complete re-installation.

Before continuing, here, I should add that we took Symantec's advice, regarding the problem with the mscoree.dll file:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02112512224107

That is, we chose to ignore that problem.

Now, after re-installing the packages that came with the Sony VAIO desktop, and after re-installing W'XP Pro Upgrade and W'XP Svc Pk 2, we arrived almost at the same problem.

At this point, we no longer had the problem with the mscoree.dll file --- that problem did not arise.

Yet, we still had the problem with both the learn32.dll and pctree32.dll files being "inaccessible" according to Symantec's diagnostic sofware (One Button Checkup or WinDoctor, did not matter, they both found the error.)

We then chose to make the Symantec software happy. We followed along with a tip about a similar problem, written about in Microsoft's Knowledge Base, article no. 320550:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320550

We copied from here:

C:\WINDOWS\Help\SBSI\Training\

the two files, learn32.dll and pctree32.dll, into here:

C:\Windows\System32\

We restarted the computer and ran One Button Checkup again.

The Symantec software was then "satisfied" and did not report the "cannot access ..." errors.

We ran into a similar problem, a couple years ago, that we "fixed" by placing a dummy-file, a blank or empty Notepad file, yet we gave it the name of the file that the Symantec software had a concern (shell32.dll) ... into here, on a computer running Windows 2000 Professional:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\

W2K does not come with such a directory setup; instead, the operating system is generally here:

C:\WINNT ...

Yet, we followed the tip found on some forum (probably Symantec's), by placing the "dummy" as stated:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\shell32.dll

The Symantec diagnostic software found that and was "satisfied" if not truly "fixed."

Hope this helps you with the problems you found.

here is a solution that work for me... i hit start, then did a search for
"learn32.dll" i found that the search came up with a file extension

i copy "learn32.dll", then on the start button , right click explore, click on drive C: then click on windows folder , then click on sytem32 folder ,
i pasted "learned 32.dll" in system32 folder and auto rearange by name, making sure the file i pasted was there... i did this same step again to "pctree32.dll" i ran norton system once more works and had no more errors

Hey, thanks guys for the answers but they came too late. I ended up re-installing Windows. Everything worked fine after that including System Works. I was on my way to the back country of the Cascade Mountains and ended up being off the grid for the next 5 months living by the gun and hook. Just now getting back on the internet. Thanks again for the help. Hank
