reboot problem
I have Ghost ver 9 installed on a Win2k machine. It works well except that when I shut down the computer at night, it will not actually shut down, but reboot.
At shut down a blue screen appears for a fraction of a second, before it reboots. Basically I have discovered that the Pqv2i.sys driver in Ghost is causing this reboot. If Ghost is NOT running (I have it on an automatic schedule for each day), then the computer shuts down normally. Sometimes, if the computer does shut down normally, after running Ghost, then the next time I try to boot, the computer will go to a blue screen. My solution is to keep a copy of pqv2i.sys on a floppy and manually copy it to the system32 file folder. Once done, the computer will boot normally. I have tried replacing the Pqv2i.sys file (thinking it was corrupt and uninstalling Ghost and re-installing all with no change. I can't find anything on the Symantec site...any ideas? |

Thanks for the post, however, I have all the latest patches and service packs. I regularly update my OS, virus protection, spyware, firewall, etc. I have tried uninstalling Ghost and re-installing with no luck.

Norton Ghost 9 XP failed boot
After much researching, my experience with Windows XP and Norton Ghost the bootup failure is related to a bad Pqv2i.sys file. Symantec has only this reference and suggested repair:
Symantec's solution I have found the repair ineffective. I consequently removed Norton Ghost 9 and choose another Windows backup program instead. The Pqv2i.sys file is part of their .Net user validation system. I approved of paying for software, but this is going too far. Liveupdate, BTW, does nothing. The quick way to get your sytem back when you get a Pqv2i.sys file error message on startup is boot up using a DOS startup disk, go to C:\windows\windows32\drivers and rename the Pqv2i.sys file to Pqv2i.old and reboot. This will end the Norton Ghost 9.0 program functionality but it will also get your computer back. You can then delete the program and install one that doesn't have the .net (Pqv2i.sys). PC Magazine (www.pcmag.com) recently had a review of windows based backup programs. I recommend their editor's choice. Haasman |
