HELP! Error loading OS

I'm trying to re-install XP, with a new ASUS motherboard, and AThalon 2800 processor. Got a brand new 80 gig hd (trying to rebuild almost ground-up.) When I get it powered up, it flys right to the error loading OS, though it's random. I have also gotten HD error messages, and even got almsot completely installed before the screen went black and it rebooted. This is not due to the motherboard, and I actually had xp running until I tried to install a sound card- pulled the sound card but no help. Any suggestions?

Note: My husband is the one who usually does this stuff, and is in the service, so unavailable to help. Iny ideas would be most apprciated, especially in simple terms- I'm better than a newbie, but by no means very skilled at this kind of thing. THANKS!!!

What kind of hard drive are you using? IDE or SATA? If IDE, what is the jumper set to? Master, slave or CS (cable select)?
