Install PowerToys for Windows XP here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx. After install open TweakUI go to logon click + sign>Unread Mail, in right panel uncheck box that says "Show unread mail on Welcome Screen". Select whether you want setting for just yourself or all users. Click OK and reboot. That should clean it up for you.
