Hmm - first things first:
You need to follow the flow of power & make sure it's nothing simple - like a blown circuit breaker, or some little person flipping the power switch off at the back of your power supply. 1) Check the wall socket, UPS, or surge protector by plugging in another device to see if they have power. If they don't - likely the problem isn't your PC. [Time to check your circuit breaker box]. 2) If the socket, UPS, or surge protector test OK, unplug & then replug your computer's power cable (it's unlikely that a power cable would be damaged, but you could take a quick look to make sure it hasn't been sliced by something like a sharp edge of a piece of heavy furniture - and, obviously, don't touch any bare wires). 3) If the socket & cable look OK, make sure the power supply's on/off switch is in the "on" position [not all power supplies have this switch, but if yours does, the "-" setting is "on", while the "O" setting is "off"]. Also check that the voltage is set to 115 if you're in the U.S. or 230 in Europe. 4) If all these check out OK, look closely at the power switch on your computer, just to make sure that, if you've been inside the case recently, the front of the case isn't completely closed, and the switch isn't depressing far enough to make contact. If all these check out, it's time to go to our No Boot troubleshooter: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=12753 That thread was written for new builds, but is good for old computers that won't boot. My first suspicion would be a failed power supply. Best of luck . . . Gary [All this is assuming that by "nothing powers on" you mean *Nothing* = no lights, no fans spin, no beeps, nada.] |

make sure everything is pressed in firmly but gently. If it still doesn't work unplug everything from the power supply but the motherboard the main hard drive and whatever else is essential for the computer to run. if it works the power supply is just too weak if not it might be dead.

A hard drive is not essential for a computer to run.
All you need is VIDEO, Motherboard, RAM, CPU, and PSU. That is a basic setup. |

But leaving the HDD connected will give a good indication if the HDD doesn't spin.
That would be an end result if the power supply is defective or the supply control circuitry is bad. |

Press F2 and look in the Power section. You either have a fan that's not running (or running too slow) or a power supply voltage that's out of tolerance.
