safely remove hardware (but i dont want to!)

I have a safely remove hardware icon that wont go away. it wants to remove my hard drive - but of course i dont want to do that! is this a driver problem? a setup problem? what do i need to do to stop it from telling me to remove it, without removing the hard drive?

I believe that sata drives are considered "hot swapable".

Exclamation

The reason that ICON is there is to let you know that an external device(USB,Firewire) has been plugged it to your computer (even though you know that) but not everybody pays attention to detail like you, they may forget. So in order for you to remove the device without corrupting the operating system ,Microsoft put a button there , anytime you want to remove external device you have right click on it and say " safeley remove hardware" that's when operating system will stop using external device and it will be safe to remove it.

Not entirely true. The icon means that a storage device is connected to a port that supports hot plugging. That'd be USB, Firewire and SATA, no matter whether they're internal or external.

And since SATA supports hotplugging, that icon is there, so that if you want to unplug a SATA drive while the PC is running you use the "safely remove hardware" icon, and then "hot-unplug" the SATA drive.

If it bugs you .. . well, don't know how to remove that except with "hide inactive icons" (that should do it).

I found it annoying to start with on my new build, however I do not even notice it now. Though I have to be a bit more aware when I unplug external ATA drives and pen drives.
