get 2 xp os after reinstall
i think i read how to delete one of the os but i can't seem to find it in search.
my daughter screwed up her dell by installing norton, she couldnt get into systems restore so decided to use her dell xp home disk and re-install xp.(evidently the dell disk did not format the HD) this seemed to work and got her computer back up BUT now evidently the other install of xp is still on the computer, she has to click which one she wants at startup. she lives 350 miles away and i don't know much about dell's, how does she eliminate the old xp install?

Control Panel->System Icon->Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery
You can change the time setting or click the Edit button to edit the boot.ini file. (i would just adjust the time setting)

doesn't that just limit the time you have to look at it, i think she has two xp os's installed and she needs to remove the one that messed up. she indicated that at start up she was given the option of which xp to boot up. maybe i don't understand the time setting thing.

It's very doutfull there are two full blown copies of Windows on the machine. You'll need to confirm and see if there are...
The dual boot screen is a pretty common issue with over the top installs. |

The install would default to installing the OS files to C:\Windows, overwriting the old OS. My guess is that the same OS is in the boot.ini file twice, but theres an easy way to find out. Boot to one OS, then restart. Then boot to the other OS. If they both look the same, and settings are the same, then they must be the same OS.

ric i think that is prob. what it is , is there a way to delete one of them? i have never had this happen on my comp. i built mine and know kinda what to do but the dell with their disk etc. leaves me in the dark.i would have thought when she installed the os it should have formatted the hd, evidently it did not.i'll have her try booting to each os and see what happens.

You can simply open boot.ini (in the C drive, probably a hidden file) then delete one of the lines under [operating systems], assuming they are the same OS.
